postheadericon Mandatory E-Verify: an idea before its time

I am writing this in response to a recent op-ed by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas). His op-ed was in response to a recent op-ed by Eliseo Medina of the SEIU. I am writing here to say that they are both right... and they are both wrong. 

Lamar Smith wrote his op-ed in support of E-Verify. I am in support of E-Verify. He claims his recent mandatory E-Verify Bill will allow citizens to fill jobs currently filled by illegal immigrants. He is partially correct, in that! some citizens would fill jobs created by the loss of certain positions currently held by illegal immigrants. Eliseo Medina writes that this bill is a jobs killer, and that the 82-page manual is too onerous for small businesses to use. He is correct that this bill is absolutely a jobs killer, but he is incorrect that small businesses cannot eventually use E-Verify.
