Supporters and critics alike have interpreted Justice Richard Goldstone’s recent op-ed in the Washington Post as a retraction of the conclusions of the UN Fact-Finding Mission that bears his name. They’re wrong.
 
Goldstone, a former justice of the South African Constitutional Court, led the UN investigations into the deaths of approximately 1400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis during Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s 2008-09 military incursion into Gaza.
 
Goldstone’s op-ed responds directly to new evidence from Israeli investigations and the UN-commissioned Report of the Committee of Independent Experts led by Judge Mary McGowan Davis, released last month. In reconsidering aspects of the report, Goldstone concludes that had Israel cooperated with the UN mission and presented such evidence from the beginning, “The Goldstone Report would have been a different document.”
