postheadericon Public broadcasting is a vital public service

At a time when much of the world is facing economic and political disaster, it is perplexing that our Congress would direct an assault on public broadcasting â€" one of the most effective means of communicating an in-depth understanding of these important issues.

During the Iraq war, a respected research organization found that “NPR/PBS â€" parts of the U.S. public broadcasting system â€" are notable because their viewers and listeners consistently held fewer misperceptions with respect to verifiable facts relating to the Iraq war than respondents who obtained their information from other news sources.” 

Earlier this month, the devastating earthquake in Japan and warnings in advance of the subsequent tsunami were first reported and televised live for the Japanese people, and then to the world, through NHK â€" the Japanese public broadcasting service.
