The top U.S. military official in Afghanistan on Sunday condemned a Florida pastor’s recent burning of the Koran, an act that has prompted deadly protests in recent days.

General David Petraeus said the burning of the sacred Muslim text “was hateful, it was intolerant and it was extremely disrespectful and again, we condemn it in the strongest manner possible,” CNN reports.

“Ambassador Mark Sedwill called the burning of a Quran by a small Florida church ‘an act of disrespect to the Muslim faith and to all peoples of faith. It does not represent the views of the peoples or governments of the alliance,’” their piece adds.
