postheadericon Kirk pledges to donate salary during government shutdown

If the government does shut down, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) will donate his salary to a foundation for pulmonary fibrosis.

He announced the news in a Tweet on Thursday.

"Congress should find bipart solution to cut spending and keep gov open. Will donate salary to Pulm Fibrosis Foundation if we can't," Kirk tweeted.

In recent days a number of lawmakers have voiced their opposition to receiving salaries during a shutdown. Most lawmakers have said they would rather members of Congress and the president not receive any salary at all.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) sent a letter to his colleagues Thursday, voicing his opposition to receiving a salary during a shutdown and pledging to give it to charity.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) has proposed legislation that will prevent members from being paid during a shutdown. It passed the Senate but has stalled in the House.
