postheadericon GOP lawmaker says WH will help speed negotiations

The White House's increased involvement in talks on a longterm federal spending bill is likely to speed the negotiations toward a compromise, Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said Wednesday.

"I think the White House getting involved at this late date can only help the negotiations going on," McCotter said on ABC News's "Topline."

McCotter's comments come as the April 8 deadline to come to a deal and avoid a government shutdown draws closer.

President Obama criticized Congress Tuesday for failing to strike a deal on a spending bill after weeks of negotiations, saying there's "no excuse" for dragging out the fight.

Recently, Democrats have been saying that a compromise surrounding $33 billion in cuts to current federal spending was in reach, despite Republican denials. Boehner has said that $33 billion in cuts is too small.

On Wednesday Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said that there was a "glimmer of hope" that l! awmakers would reach a deal and avoid a government shutdown.
