With the federal government poised to shutdown in a matter of hours, most Americans will soon begin feeling the effect. Hundreds of thousands of workers inside and outside the beltway will temporarily lose their jobs and incomes. The impact will be felt far beyond federal employees: 

If a shutdown were to happen, the federal money that helps states pay the administrative costs of their stretched unemployment programs could dry up, forcing states to advance the money to keep the programs running. Federal grants for a variety of programs â€" including research, higher education and training local law enforcement officers â€" could be delayed.  â€" New York Times

Meanwhile, life for members of Congress will continue largely unchanged.
