This week, the Obama administration is celebrating its commitment to openness and transparency with Sunshine Week. On his first full day in office, the President wrote, "A democracy requires accountability, and accountability requires transparency.” He called on federal agencies to "usher in a new era in open government." The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is at the very center of what open government is all about -- through this law, the public has the right to know what the government is doing and why.

It is hard to disagree with the administration's philosophy of promoting open government and freedom of information. However, actions speak louder than words, and it is clear that there are a number of dark and stormy clouds hovering over Sunshine Week.
