The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee traveled to Egypt Sunday as the country works to rebuild its government after the fall of President Hosni Mubarak.

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) is scheduled to meet with top military and political officials to discuss internal reforms as well as the violent uprising in Libya, Egypt's next door neighbor, Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reported.

Kerry's visit comes one day a! fter U.S. and allied forces launched military strikes against forces loyal to Col. Moammar Gadhafi, Libya's leader who has tried to violently suppress a rebellion against his regime.

Egypt was one of America's strongest allies in the Middle East under Mubarak, who was ousted from power last month after a weeks-long popular uprising against him.

According to U.S. and Libyan rebel officials, Egypt has supplied anti-Gadhafi forces with arms.

Egypt also held a vote on a slate of constitutional reforms on Saturday, which drew 25 m! illion v oters to the polls, according to Al-Ahram.
