Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. James McGovern (D-Mass.) react to President Obama's visit to the tomb of Salvadoran Archbisop Oscar Romero:

Obama visits Romero's tomb“President Obama’s visit to the tomb of Archbishop Romero is more than a homage to a Salvadoran national hero who gave his life for democracy and human rights during a period of repression and war.  It is a tribute to El Salvador's historic national reconciliation and the consolidation of democracy. President Funes’ election in 2009 and his leadership in building democracy and improving citizen security throughout Central America are accomplishments of not just himself and his party, but the! Salvadoran nation.”

Sen. John Kerry is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

“I am very gratified that President Obama will visit the tomb of Archbishop Oscar Romero during his time in El Salvador.  This act pays homage to a man who was truly dedicated to truth, justice and peace, and who walked with the poor of his country.

“It is important that we not forget all those who died, disappeared and suffered during the civil war.  It is equally as important that the U.S. recommit itself to helping and supporting Salvadoran efforts that advance human rights, end impunity, and address hunger and poverty, just as Archbishop Romero commanded us to do.”

James McGovern represents Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.
