postheadericon Obama to honor Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks

President Obama will honor the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks at the White House next Friday.

The Blackhawks, Obama's hometown squad, captured sports' most famous trophy by besting the Philadelphia Flyers with a thrilling overtime goal by winger Patrick Kane in the deciding Game Six. Their win ended a 49-year title drought.

After the ceremony, First Lady Michelle Obama will host an outdoor street hockey clinic for local youth. The clinic will be conducted by members of the Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals, who will play each other in Washington on Sunday. The clinic is part of the first lady's "Let’s Move!" initiative.

Blackhawks players and staff are also scheduled to visit troops and their families earlier in the week at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

Though Obama did not attend any of the games during the Cup finals, he phoned head coach Joel Quenneville to congratulate him and the team. Obama reportedly watched some of the games on television.

Vice President Joe Biden, who is a Philadelphia Flyers fan, attended the fourth game of the Cup finals in Philadelphia.
