postheadericon America cannot afford to ignore flood insurance reform

Floods are as inevitable as they are hazardousâ€"homeowners in flood-prone regions of the country today face a one-in-four chance of suffering flood damage at some point over the life of a 30-year mortgage. Yet millions of American families and businesses today have been left dangerously vulnerable due to political inaction in Washington over the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

On Friday, the Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity of the House Financial Services Committee, led by Rep. Judy Biggert, began a new round of debate over how we as a nation should prepare for devastating floods. This issue affects nearly every region of the country, whether it’s dealing with the aftermath of blizzards in the northeast, hurricanes along the Gulf Coast, river surges in the Midwest or tsunamis on the West coast.
