postheadericon Miller still undecided on McConnell for GOP leader

Should he win the general election, Republican Senate nominee Joe Miller has not made up his mind as to whether or not he will support Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)

Miller, a Tea Party-backed candidate who defeated incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaksa) in the primary, reiterated to the conservative National Review on Tuesday that he is still undecided on McConnell's bid for another term as Senate GOP leader:

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), the Senate GOP leader, cannot bank on Miller’s support. “I’m taking a wait-and-see approach,” Miller says.

Other Tea Party-endorsed Senate candidates have raised doubts about McConnell as minority leader, even though he enjoys widespread support among Senate Republicans.

Observers predict ! that Republicans will make gains on the Democrats' 59-seat majority in the November midterms, and some have said that it's possible the GOP could take the majority, which would put McConnell in line to become majority leader.

Kentucky GOP Senate nominee Rand Paul had wavered on his position on McConnell, who must be elected to a new term as leader in the next Congress. McConnell endorsed Paul's primary challenger Trey Grayson, but has since backed the son of libertarian Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).

Even if Miller opposes McConnell, it might not affect the final vote outcome. The Kentucky senator said last week that he already has the votes for another term as GOP leader.

With regards to Murkowkski, Miller said that he would like her support and came close to predicting that she would endorse him, rather than launch a third-party or write-in bid against him:

Still, not everyone is scrambling to assist the insurgent. Murkowski, for her part, has yet to endorse Miller. “We’re giving her some space,” he says. “She’ll come around in her own time. We certainly would like to have her support. We want all Republicans behind this candidacy.”
