Pop sensation Lady Gaga â€" who currently has more Twitter followers than any other user on the network â€" encouraged fans on Tuesday morning to stand for the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell," a Clinton-era policy that bars those who are openly gay from serving in the military.

"Gay Veterans were my VMA [MTV Video Music Awards] dates," she tweeted. "Repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell. CALL HARRY REID to Schedule Senate Vote."

A defense authorization bill containing a provision that would repeal the policy is ex! pected on the Senate floor next week.

Lady Gaga's message included a photo (seen below) from the event. She is surrounded by members of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a leading group working against the ban.
