postheadericon DNC launches second TV ad targeting Boehner on ties to lobbyists

Democrats released a second national TV ad in a week targeting House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) on his ties to business.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) released a new spot on Tuesday to add to its initial ad buy, this time accusing Boehner, the man who would be speaker in a Republican majority, of being "a speaker for big-time lobbyists."

The spot, called "Boehner Land," is meant to play up the top House Republican's ties to business and lobbying, as asserted in a story published over the weekend by the New York Times. (Boehner's office has said that piece "ignores basic facts, contains numerous factual inaccuracies and distortions, and was written by a reporter that refused to include on-the-record statements from Boehner staff until after the story had already ! appeared on the paper’s website.)

The new TV spot will rotate with the other ad, "You're Welcome," targeting Boehner on jobs and the economy, in a rotation of ads on national cable beginning on Tuesday, and running roughly for a week.

"Boehner Land" frames Boehner -- the object of President Obama and Democrats' midterm election attacks -- as being cozy with lobbyists and having aggressively solicited campaign funds.

DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse sought to cast Boehner as more cozy with lobbyists than onetime House GOP Whip Tom DeLay (R-Texas), whose "K Street Project" allegedly emphasized donations in order to gain access to Republican leaders when the party was last in contr! ol of the House.

"'Boehner Land' is the K Street P! roject o n steroids -- a land where the only voices that matter are corporate lobbyists who write big campaign checks while writing legislation to their liking," Woodhouse wrote. "Boehner is already promising to their bidding - repeal health reform, repeal Wall Street reform and coddle BP and big oil."

The ad is part of an ever-growing effort by Democrats to make Boehner a key part of the midterm election's storyline, borne out of a sense that framing the would-be speaker negatively will help Democrats retain their majority this fall.
