State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley weighed in Tuesday on North Korea's recent social media push.

In a series of tweets, he welcomed its government to Twitter and the "networked world" and challenged it to allow North Korean citizens to "be connected as well." 

"The Hermit Kingdom will not change overnight," Crowley said," but technology once introduced can't be shut down."

"Just ask Iran," he added, referring to the use of online tools by Iranians to s! hare information about the so-called Green Revolution of June 2009. 

North Korea joined Twitter on Aug. 12 and YouTube on July 14.
