Nick Ayers, the executive director of the Republican Governors Association (RGA), appeared to be spurning Democrats when he tweeted Wednesday, "If I had 50% less money I would be complaining too."

Reports out this week revealed that the RGA raised $58 million between Jan. 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010, while its Democratic counterpart raised $40 million during the same period.

One RGA contribution â€" $1 million from News Corporation, home of Fox News and The Wall Street Journal â€" drew criticism from Democrats who said it confirmed suspicions that the outlets are in league with the GOP.

"Time and time again, Fox News has defended itself against accusations that it is nothing more than a tool of the Republican Party. We know now that the reality is so much worse: they're ! bankrolling the GOP," said Nathan Daschle of the Democratic Governors Association. "Fox's news division is ignoring the fact that its own parent company made a direct and unprecedented partisan contribution to defeat Democrats."

Fox spokesman Jack Horner responded, saying "It's patently false that a corporate donation would have any bearing on our news-gathering activities at Fox News or any other of our properties."

While the RGA has a funding edge over its Democratic counterpart, filings show that the Democrats' three campaign committees have outdone the GOP's, with $60.1 million in cash on hand at the end of May compared to Republicans' $42.7 million.
