postheadericon Obama and McConnell to go toe-to-toe in Wednesday meeting

President Obama and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will go head-to-head in a meeting at the White House on Wednesday.

The top Senate Republican will meet with Obama in the Oval Office just after 3 p.m. this afternoon, the White House announced Tuesday night in its daily guidance.

The meeting is sure to feature an interesting conversation between the president and McConnell, the senator who's led the opposition to many of Obama's top legislative initiatives.

Over the past year and a half, McConnell has united Republicans against healthcare reform and the public option, a government-run health plan favored by many Senate liberals. McConnell also kept many GOP senators in line against the stimulus and Wall Street reform, and has stretched the Senate schedule to force Democrats to punt many of their desired bills down the line.

Obama's meeting with McConnell will be his last of the week before leaving for Chicago! , where the president will spend his birthday in his hometown.
