postheadericon Romney looks to define economic debate with anti-debt plea in Iowa

Mitt Romney sought to define his candidacy as a crusade against excess spending and debt during an economic address in Des Moines on Tuesday, as the presumptive Republican nominee warned the size of government threatened the American dream.

Flanked by five American flags and a banner reading, "Cut the Spending," Romney railed against the Obama administration, arguing the president's stimulus and healthcare initiatives were historically wasteful.

"When the men and women who settled the Iowa prairie saw a fire in the distance, they didn’t look around for someone else to save them or go back to sleep hoping the wind might blow another direction. They knew that their survival was up to them," Romney said. "A prairie fire of debt is sweeping across Iowa and our nation and every day we fail to act that fire gets closer to the homes and children we love."
