A new poll from Fox News shows President Obama opening a lead over presumptive Republican Republican nominee Mitt Romney as attitudes on the economy improve.

The president leads Romney 46-39 percent among likely national voters, with President Obama gaining ground among independent voters. In a poll released three weeks prior, the candidates were tied with 46 percent each.

Much of Obama's progress can be attributed to his improving numbers among independents. While Romney maintains a 5 percent advantage among those not affiliated with a party, last month he led by some 13 percentage points.
