postheadericon McCain says he picked Palin because she was âwell qualifiedâ

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) advised presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney to find a running mate who would be "well qualified" to assume the presidency.

"I think it's a person that he knows he could trust, and the primary, the absolute, most important aspect is, if something happened to him, would that person be well qualified to take that place?" said McCain on ABC's This Week when asked to weigh in on Romney's vice presidential selection process. 

"I happen to believe that was the primary factor in my decision in 2008," McCain added. "And I know it will be Mitt's."

McCain selected former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008.
