postheadericon McCain: Criticism of Romney over handling of 'traitor' remark a 'double standard'

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) defended Mitt Romney from criticism levied by the Obama campaign Monday after the presumptive Republican nominee did not immediately repudiate a woman who suggested the president should be tried for treason, calling the complaints "a double standard."

Democrats quickly pounced on the remark, saying Romney should have immediately renounced the woman, just as McCain famously did in his 2008 presidential bid when a woman at a town hall said President Obama was an "Arab."

“Today we saw Mitt Romney’s version of leadership: standing by silently as his chief surrogate attacked the President’s family at the event and another supporter alleged that the President should be tried for treason," said Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith in a statement.

But McCain said the Obama team had little ground to stand on after shying away from criticism of Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa Jr., who generated controversy in September when, ! discussing the Tea Party, he called for workers to “take these son-of-a-bitches out” in the coming election.
