postheadericon Homeland Security opening independent probe into Secret Service prostitution scandal

The Department of Homeland Security is opening a separate investigation into the brewing prostitution scandal that has ensnarled the Secret Service and U.S. military, the acting inspector general announced Monday.

"Last week, with the initial stages of the USSS internal investigation nearing completion, we notified the USSS of our intent to conduct a comprehensive review of this matter,” Homeland Security acting Inspector General Charles Edwards said in a letter obtained by CNN. 

Edwards added that "field work is beginning immediately" on the investigation, expected to look into multiple allegations that Secret Service and military personnel drank heavily and solicited prostitutes while completing advance work ahead of presidential visits.
