President Obama's senior campaign adviser said Wednesday that Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker shouldn't feel muzzled after his comments critical of the campaign's focus on Mitt Romney's tenure at Bain Capital sparked controversy earlier this week.

The popular mayor called the president's attack ads "nauseating" and "crap" during an appearance on "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

"From a very personal level, I'm not about to sit here and indict private equity," Booker said, comparing the attacks to questions raised about President Obama's affiliation with controversial pastor Jeremiah Wright.
