postheadericon New Jersey lawmakers send gay marriage bill to Christie

New Jersey's state Assembly approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage Thursday, marking the latest in a series of recent advances by gay-rights advocates in an election year.

The Assembly voted 42-33 to pass the bill, which the state Senate had passed earlier in the week. The bill now goes to the desk of Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.), who has already pledged to veto it without delay.

Democrats could try to overturn his veto, but have been unable to successfully do so on any other issue since Christie took office. The razor-thin margin used to pass the bill in the Assembly â€" Democrats needed 41 votes, and they got 42 votes â€" suggested this would be no exception.
