postheadericon GOP interest in presidential race slips as Obama leads GOP challengers

Republican interest in the presidential race is slipping, with conservative voters dissatisfied with their choices and President Obama gaining steam in the general-election November showdown, according to an Associated Press/GfK poll released Wednesday.

Only 40 percent of Republicans say they "have a great deal of interest in following the contest," down from 48 percent in December. Less than a quarter of Republicans are "strongly satisfied" with the GOP field, and four in 10 are unhappy with the current crop of Republican candidates.

The lack of enthusiasm is likely attributed to a Republican electorate sharply divided over who their presidential candidates should be. The AP poll found Republicans evenly split between Rick Santorum â€" who garnered the support of a third of those surveyed â€" and Mitt Romney, with 32 percent. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul were tied with 15 percent each.
