postheadericon Reid, Pelosi use Veterans Day to promote jobs agenda

Top Democrats packaged in their jobs agenda to their Veterans Day tweets on Friday.

“When #Nevadans serving overseas return, it's our duty 2 repay their service by ensuring they can find a #job & have access 2 medical," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) wrote Friday.

“We owe Veterans & military families our unending gratitudeâ€"thank you. This #VeteransDay, let us honor & support vets by creating jobs," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted.

The Democrats' tweets echoed Obama’s job-creation message in his Veterans Day speech delivered earlier in the day. Obama used his speech to highlight his platform of job creation, and praised the Democrats' effort so far.

On Thursday, the Senate passed a bill that would encourage businesses to hire veterans by providing monthly payments for retraining assistance to returning veterans. The bill also includes the tax credit Obama proposed in his jobs legislation for companies that hire veterans, and is expected to pass in the House next week.

Other Democratic congressmen, like Reps. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) and Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) tweeted about the need for additional legislation that would provide veterans with jobs.

"We honor veterans today for their service to our country. But, we also need to help them with education, training and fi! nding a job," Pallone tweeted.

"I am very concerned about jobs, homelessness and healthcare for our nation’s heroes, which is why I have co-sponsored several bills to help," Towns wrote.

Similarly, Republicans used their Veterans Day tweets to plug legislation. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) tweeted about a bipartisan issue he and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) support.

“#veteranscantwait 4 better access to transportation resources. Read abt latest issue @SenatorDurbin and I teamed up on bit.ly/sdP1yt," Kirk tweeted.

And Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), a 20! 12 presidential candidate, used her Veterans Day tweet to talk about the importance of adoption.

“Great article describing a military family’s story of adopting a child: http://tiny.cc/6iqho #NationalAdoptionMonth #VeteransDay," Bachmann tweeted.

Bachmann’s tweets have centered around adoption ever since she introduced a resolution on Oct. 27 honoring National Adoption Month.
