postheadericon Poll: Majority want supercommittee deal with spending cuts, tax hikes

A poll released Monday found that a majority of Americans believe the supercommittee should have struck a deal that included "increases in taxes on businesses and higher-income Americans," along with, but to a lesser extent, "major cuts in spending on domestic government programs" â€" and that they are very unhappy with congressional leaders of both parties.

Two-thirds of those surveyed in the CNN/ORC poll supported tax increases, up from 63 percent in August. Meanwhile, 60 percent said that the government should cut domestic spending programs, up 3 percent from three months ago.

Unsurprisingly, the support for both proposals was polarized along party lines. Some 88 percent of Democrats, and nearly 7 in 10 independents supported increasing taxes on the richest Americans, versus about 4 in 10 Republicans. Conversely, 77 percent of Republicans and 62 percent of independents favored major domestic spending cuts, while only 42 percent of Democrats did.
