Newt Gingrich sought Tuesday to clarify comments he made during a speech in New Hampshire Monday in which he called child labor laws "truly stupid" and advocated replacing unionized janitors in school with poor children who were attending school.

But the former Speaker did not abandon a controversial call for children be employed as school janitors.

“I’m not suggesting that they drop out of school and become janitors, I’m talking about working 20 hours a week and being empowered to succeed," Gingrich said to the Washington Post.
