Gingrich blasts supercommittee: It's 'the dumbest idea'
Newt Gingrich blasted the deficit-cutting supercommittee as âthe dumbest idea I have seen in a very long lifetime."
The former speaker, who has seen a surge in his poll numbers, made the remarks at a campaign event in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, according to a report for Radio Iowa.
It was one of many colorful comments comments he used to describe his distaste for the committee.
He noted it was âmaniacally stupidâ to have automatic triggers to cut spending if the deficit reduction committee canât come to an agreement on $1.2 trillion in spending cuts.
âGod didnât come down one morning and say, âIf you donât reach this deadline, terrible things will happen,â Gingrich was quoted as saying. âThe politicians in Washington in both parties failed to achieve an intelligent solution i! n the summer, kicked the ball down the road, and are now in the process of failing to achieve an intelligent solution in the fallâ¦Itâs as though somebody walked in and said, âYou know, Iâm under instructions to shoot you in the head unless you have me cut off your leg.ââ
The deficit reduction panel has until Nov. 23 to reach an agreement on at least $1.2 trillion in budget cuts, or face triggering $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts, over $600 billion of which would come from the Department of Defense. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has called these cuts âmindlessâ and said they would do âcatastrophic damageâ to national security.
Gingrich referred to the potential cuts as âautomatic stupidity as a replacement for self-government.â
On Sunday, Sen. Toomey (R-Pa.), a member of the supercommittee, said Congress should reconsider the trigger, and floated the idea of legislating around it to avoid it. But Presiden! t Obama responded by saying the supercommittee needed to âbi! te the b ullet and do what needs to be done.â
Gingrich sided with Toomey on getting rid of the triggers, while slamming the very idea of a committee charged with handling the matter.
He said lawmakers should âdrop the threatâ of the across-the-board cuts if the supercommittee fails.
âThe idea that youâre going to browbeat the American people into supporting something stupid because you already passed something thatâs even dumber is really bad government and a real betrayal of the principles of self-government,â Gingrich said. âJust drop it. Come to us with something thatâs on its face worth passing.â
âI am watching the supercommittee in Washington with amazement,â he added. âThis is the dumbest idea I have seen in a very long lifetime.â
Gingrich has seen his support in the polls grow as former front-runner Herman Cain has sunk because of sexual harassment allegations. According to a CNN-ORC poll relea! sed on Monday, Gingrich is up 14 percent from October, and only trailing Romney by 2 points -- 24 percent to 26 percent.
