In an interview Monday, former President Bill Clinton warned Democrats not to "underestimate" the GOP field of presidential hopefuls.

"It's always a mistake to underestimate your opponent," Clinton told USA Today. "People grow in these campaigns. How many times have you seen somebody get better in the course of an election? And it's also unpredictable what happens."

He might have been speaking of Rick Perry, whom he defended in the interview. Perry entered the race in August as a front-runner in the polls, but has fallen rapidly and currently trails front-runners Mitt Romney and Herman Cain. Perry now vies with Newt Gingrich at 11 to 14 percent in recent polls.
