postheadericon Romney hopes Michigan ties will secure straw poll win

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is hoping that local ties to the state where his father was governor - Michigan - will help propel him to victory in one of the earlier Republican primaries.

Romney was campaigning in the Wolverine State before the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference, a convention of 1,600 party activists and donors who should play a critical role in Michigan's February 28 primary. In meeting with constituents, Romney played on nostalgia, speaking fondly of his time growing up in the state.

"Everything I see around here reminds me of my parents," Romney said to CNN. The governor said the state "feels very much like home."
