The national debate over reducing government deficits will examine health care spending - one of the largest items in the federal budget. Political leaders need to understand that it is wrong to claim, as some have done, that deep, unidentified cuts will not impact patients.

 Government insurance plans pay for the medical care of the elderly, the poor, children who have no other insurance, and veterans and soldiers, among others. Our taxes also support the training of new physicians and the world’s most successful medical research system, which has saved millions of lives.
