postheadericon Bloomberg downplays terrorist threat

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said that he believed that the terrorist threat reported by the Department of Homeland Security was "not that likely" to come to fruition, and urged New Yorkers to continue to go about their ordinary days.

"We only have one source, which leaves you questioning," Bloomberg said on Fox News. "I feel very safe, but we take everything seriously even if it's something that's not likely."

Bloomberg said he didn't expect a potential terrorist attack â€" or ramped up security â€" to effect the events planned for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

"If you ask my best guess, we'll make it through the weekend," Bloomberg said. "I think one of the ways to look at it is that the Department of Homeland Security didn't raise its threat level."

In the days leading up to the anniversary, security had been ramped up in Washington and New York after what the Department of Homeland Security has called “specific and credible, but unconfirmed" threats of an attack. The mayor also encouraged citizens of those cities to go about their business.

"In some senses the terrorists win, because if you can't have an economy and have a future, that's what they want to take away."

Bloomberg also downplayed criticism that in releasing information about the terror threat, the government might be scaring citizens from visiting cities.

"We live in a democracy. Do you want information, or don't you?" Bloomberg said. "I don't think you'll see fewer people on the street."
