In their zeal to attack workers and immigrants, Republicans on Capitol Hill have set out to destroy the already teetering economy. There is no other way to explain why Rep. Lamar Smith, (R-Tex.) and other immigration restrictionists would propose the mandatory E-Verify legislation now making its way through the House.

Instead of trying to grow new jobs, the Smith bill would further cripple the economy by mandating that all employers rely on an error-ridden government database that does not accurately verify worker eligibility. Under the current voluntary system, E-Verify fails to detect 54 percent of undocumented workers who are run through the system, according to a study conducted for the Department of Homeland Security.
