postheadericon Our moment in Iran: Exporting democracy through technology

In the wake of the recent uprisings in the Middle East, perhaps no other single variable has been as important to the empowerment of freedom-loving people, as information. 

Political power can increasingly be wielded through social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter.

It was through the use of technology and communications devices that the Green Movement in Iran was able to grow and gain influence internationally. While some pundits will attempt to place the blame on the Obama administration for not attempting a more forceful intervention during the mass protests following the elections, we must acknowledge that this would have been ultimately counterproductive. The tools of political change in Iran lay in the hands of its peoples. As we have realized in Iraq, affecting change by military force alone could cause the most dangerous side effects. That is, the very people who we want to influence end up turning against us.
