postheadericon NRCC demands N.H. radio station take down ad attacking GOPer on Medicare

The National Republican Congressional Committee is demanding that a New Hampshire TV station take down an ad by two liberal organizations charging that Rep. Charlie Bass (R-N.H.) is in favor of eliminating Medicare because he voted for House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) budget plan.

"The Advertisement is blatantly and wholly false, and has been deliberately crafted to mislead and frighten voters about certain provisions in the Republicans’ Budget Resolution for Fiscal Year 2012 (“the Budget Resolution”)," NRCC Deputy General Counsel Jackie Barber writes in the letter to Comcast Boston. "A similar advertisement has been judged false by PolitiFact, a nonpartisan, Pulitzer Prize-winning project of The St. Petersburg Times. Thus, because the Advertisement conveys messages plainly disproven by fact, on behalf of Rep. Charlie Bass, I respectfully demand that your network refuse to air the Advertisement and that no airings of this misleading co! ntent be allowed on your network."

The ad the NRCC is objecting to was created by the liberal groups Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America. It charges that Bass voted to end Medicare with his support for the House GOP's budget proposal.

"When Congressman Charlie Bass voted to end Medicare, that was an attack on New Hampshire families just like mine," a woman in the ad says. "My father worked with Charlie and respected him. I voted for him five times but Charlie Bass has changed."

The ad is part of Democrats' and their supporters' effort to repeat the result of the New York 26th district special election which was considered a referendum on Ryan's budget plan, and particularly its proposal to change Medicare into a voucher system that subsidizes health insurance for Americans currently under the age of 55. Liberals have attributed Democrats' win in the district to associating Republicans with Ryan's proposal on Medic! are and have said they hope to repeat the outcome of that elec! tion wit h Anne McLane Kuster who is challenging Bass.
