postheadericon Gingrich supporters stand by their candidate

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's (R-Ga.) campaign turmoil hasn't scared of some Republican supporters on Capitol Hill, who reaffirmed their support for his presidential campaign.

The former Speaker hasn't lost any more supporters on Capitol Hill following the decision by a national campaign co-chairman, former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue (R), to join Tim Pawlenty's presidential campaign after a mass exodus of aides from Gingrich's campaign.

"I still think he's the best candidate, I'm still for him. I think it's a long campaign and a few bumps in the road are to be expected," said Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas).

Gingrich supporters said that the former Speaker's debate performance on Monday was encouraging, and that his shouldn't be left for dead.

"For as much as he'd been through and for his staff walking out on him the Friday before, for him to be there with his head held high, clear and precise in his answers, indicates to me ! why he's the candidate I want to support," said Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas). "Life will not always be easy, but he is able to stand in the fray and not shrink when the times get tough."

"Some of his answers were clearly head and shoulders above a lot of the other spin you were hearing up there on the podium," Burgess added.

Gingrich enjoys a great deal of support from the Georgia delegation, and hasn't suffered any defeations byond Perdue. Gov. Nathan Deal (R) reaffirmed his endorsement last week after the resignations.
