On arrival I wrote a short bio for the Embassy website: “Egypt is a fascinating, beautiful country and this posting already promises to be as exciting and interesting as my others with a very interesting internal political environment here in Egypt and regional politics in their permanent state of flux.” I had no idea just how interesting it was going to be and wandering round the empty residence this morning, checking on the progress of the works and the preparations for the new Ambassador, I was struck by how many memories already clamor for my mind’s attention in the short time I have been in Cairo.
