The time has come to bring the troops home. Support for ending the longest war in U.S. history continues to grow in the United States Congress. On May 26, 204 members of Congress, including myself and 25 other Republicans, voted to require a timeframe for withdrawal. Although that vote did not pass, we are clearly inching closer to bringing the troops home.

While Afghanistan continues to struggle for stability, the desire of many Americans to stay and fix all of the problems is understandable. Americans are problem solvers and Afghanistan has no shortage of problems to solve. But we have neither the resources nor the ability to fix all of the world’s problems. There will always be resistance to leaving because there will always be more to do.

At some point, the people of Afghanistan must step forward and choose to control their own destiny. America cannot and should not try to be all things to all people. We must prioritize the use of our resource! s.
