The Democratic National Committee quickly seized on Mitt Romney’s comment Friday that he “didn’t know all the differences” between entitlement programs until he “got into government.”

DNC Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) slammed Romney in a statement for making it “well into middle age … before he bothered to learn about Medicare and Medicaid.”

Romney ran for Senate in Massachusetts in 1994, but was defeated by incumbent Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Romney's campaign clarified his comment to reporters accompanying him on a chartered flight to South Carolina. "He didn't know the particulars and the ins and outs [of the programs]," said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul, according to CNN.
