Two Democratic lawmakers from Oregon marked the death of former Republican Sen. Mark Hatfield on Monday.

Sen. Jeff Merkley tweeted:

I have greatly admired Sen Hatfield since I had the chance to be one of the hundreds of interns he hosted over his decades of public service

Rep. Earl Blumenauer tweeted:

Mark Hatfield: political giant on war/peace, moral issues, even balanced budget amendt. Courage of convictions seldom evidenced today. Sigh.

Hatfield, who also served as governor of Oregon from 1959 to 1967, was known as an anti-war Republican throughout his political career. Hatfield! died Monday at the age of 89.
