postheadericon Challenges for female candidates are more than skin deep

Carol Felsenthal offered some interesting insight recently into some of the challenges women face running for higher office.

There’s no doubt that women seeking the presidency, awaiting a Senate confirmation or even serving in high-level advisory roles face difficulties men do not: Do they wear pantsuits or skirt-suits? Are they pretty or plain? Are they married? Do they have children? Who takes care of the children? And on and on.

In fact, I’ve argued before that there is no place where the question over women’s proper role in society is more conspicuous than in political life. And I agree with Felsenthal that these challenges reach across party lines.
