postheadericon Dems fundraise off GOP abortion funding bill

Democrats sought to raise campaign cash off of a Republican bill to limit taxpayer funding of abortion.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) wrote supporters of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) asking for contributions to fight H.R. 3, which looks to codify restrictions to prevent tax dollars from going to fund abortion.

Speier, made public during a House debate over the legislation that she had actually underwent an abortion after her pregnancy posed health risks, asked for three dollar contributions -- mirroring the bill number.

"Contribute $3 or more right now so we can get hard-hitting Rapid Response ads up holding Republican extremists in Congress accountable for their radical assault on women’s health care and reproductive freedom," she wrote.

H.R. 3 passed the House 251-175 on Wednesday, with unanimous support from Republicans, who were joined by 16 Democrats.

Democrats charged Republicans! with trying to legally redefine rape in the legislation by inserting language that would change the eligibility for instances in which women are eligible for federal abortion coverage.

"Republicans’ H.R. 3 bill would drastically restrict women's options for reproductive services by imposing burdensome new regulations on public and private insurance coverage," Speier wrote. "If made law, women would be denied using money from their personal health savings accounts to pay for abortion services."
