Richard Holbrooke was a giant of national security and American diplomacy. It is common to say of those who leave us: "He will be missed.” With Holbrooke this phrase doesn't do justice to his greatness or to our loss.

Richard Holbrooke will not only be missed, he is irreplaceable. He was the kind of national human treasure who served our country in ways that cannot be fully measured, in some ways that are famous, in other ways that will never be known, which is the way of the great diplomat.
