postheadericon Hoyer not optimistic Congress will adjourn this week

A top House Democrat on Tuesday expressed doubts that Congress can wrap up its business and get out of town by the weekend, as party leaders have hoped.

With work on a tax-cut package and a continuing resolution (CR) outstanding in both chambers, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said he's not optimistic lawmakers will adjourn before next week. 

"We are scheduled to adjourn on the 17th; the CR expires on the 18th," Hoyer told reporters at the Capitol. "I'm hopeful that we make that, [but] hopeful is not a synonym for optimism."
