This was an historic election by any objective standard. It promises to change the country’s political landscape for at least a decade. The Republican Party gained at least 61 seats in the House, and when a dozen or so undecided races are finalized it may well rise to at least 64 or 65 seats. This is the largest shift in the House in a midterm election since before World War II. It is the greatest shift from one party to another in any election since the Democratic Party gained over 70 seats in the 1948 Truman-Dewey election.
