The U.S. Navy celebrated the 235th anniversary of its inception on Wednesday, and its Twitter feeds were active in noting the occasion throughout the morning.

Adm. Mike Mullen, who is Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said:

Happy Birthday Navy! My very best to all our Sailors, Navy civilians and their families. Thanks for your service.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead said:

As Elisabeth just pos! ted, it is a fine Navy day on our birthday. Happy Birthday Shipmates.

The Naval Air Forces, tweeting at @flynavy, said:

Better start getting out the candles. Its gonna take a while to put all 235 on the cakes. #navybday (ak)

Master Chief Petty Officer Rick D. West sent a message to Navy personnel and families calling the fleet the "best it's ever been."

"I would like to thank each and every one of you for your service to our nation and our Navy, and for truly making our great Navy a global force for good. As we celebrate our anniversary, take a moment to remember those currently on watch around the world and those who have gone before us and laid the foundation to which you build upon … Happy 235th birthday Navy and HOOYAH!" the statement read, in part.

Adm. Roughead also recorded a video message to the fleet.
