Americans have never particularly liked their government. No, that’s not quite right â€" Americans like their form of government (democracy; the institutional structure of executive, legislative, and judicial branches) quite a lot, at least compared with the alternatives. What they don’t like are the people who run government, the way those people are chosen (elections good; campaigns bad), and the messy process by which policies are made once the election is over.
