postheadericon Officials react to 'Don't ask, don't tell' ruling

Officials used Twitter on Tuesday to celebrate to an order from a federal judge halting the enforcement of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, which prohibits gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said:

Today's order barring enforcement of #DADT is welcome & further affirmation constitutional rights are being denied.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) said:

Judge Phillips has ruled the DOD must halt all enforcement of #DADT. This ruling is a victory for justice & equality.

Lady Gaga, who lobbied senators in late September to repeal the policy, was notably silent on Tuesday afternoon when the decision broke.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a strong opponent of the most recent repeal provision, has also not weighed in.

The government has 60 days to appeal the ruling.
